Aromatic
Sulfonic Acids
|
The aromatic sulfonic acids are
produced by the sulfonating action of sulfuric acid, SO3 or oleum on
the aromatic compounds. They are comparable in strength to the
mineral acids such as sulfuric acid. This makes them useful in
catalytic reactions such as esterification, dehydration, acid
hydrolyses, polymerization, alkylation, and as catalyst for
thermosetting resins. Aromatic sulfonic acids are useful as
electrolytes in electroplating processes, and may serve as
intermediates in the manufacture of many synthetic chemicals.
